Monday, March 17th, 2008

I took some close up pics of a triptych I have in my bedroom called Flatiron by the NY artist Kimberly Dawn. I love the colors and I love the texture of the paint on canvas. Sooooo….if you’re like me (in that way), you might like these banners…

IM generation is taking over (CNET News.com)

Wednesday, March 12th, 2008

At the OnHollywood conference founder of AlwaysOn and media entrepreneur Tony Perkins introduced the theme of the year (second time the conference was held in Hollywood):

Web 3.0. 2007 is the year when Web 2.0 will be professionalized and mobilized. In the same sentence he said that the next generation is driving innovation. The IM (instant messaging) generation.

“Adopt or die as a company, said Tony Perkins. “Offer interactive content on every platform: PC, cell phone and TV”.

Thursday at the conference a panel of younger professionals talked about the power of the IM generation. It resulted in a blog on www.news.com:

Introducing The Z-List to Gen Plussers!

Monday, March 10th, 2008

Very off-topic tonight, but I think many of you will find this interesting. In the blog world, there is a concept, called a “meme”, which is a viral marketing concept. Each meme is based on a theme. For example, there might be a meme on your top ten favorite cities of all time. The meme concept gets circulated to other bloggers and before you know it, you are aware of the top ten favorite cities of one hundred other bloggers. I have recently discovered a meme list, called the Z-list on Dosh Dosh, a great site for bloggers. Dosh Dosh credits Mack Collier from A Viral Garden with starting ‘The Z List‘ (the original list) in December 2006.

This is a list of “NOT A-list” bloggers, but rather a tongue-in-cheek reference to the wealth of fantastic, fascinating blogs that scoot around conventional popularity contests by producing great quality on the web. There are a lot of really interesting blogs here, although I’ve not had time to visit all of them, so I’m unable to personally endorse any particular blog that I’m not familiar with. However, I am familiar with quite a few of them. Many of these bloggers offer excellent, generous help about blogging, branding, and business in general.

These blogs are predemoninantly about blogging, business and marketing, but there are also quite a few that just offer great insight and info on specific subjects. If you are excited about hearing what other bloggers from around the world have to say, you might want to take a little trip through some of the links below. So, if you see a blog title that appeals to you, just head on over! I was very excited to see The Boomer Chronicles on the list as they are one of the very popular blogs on our Blogging Boomers Carnival. It is against protocol to put one’s own blog as an addition to the Z-list. If you wish to add the list to your own blog, cut and paste the “source” code from the links below into your blog post and feel free to add my blog to your post. For more detailed instructions, head over to Dosh Dosh.

AOL News Beta Integrates Social & Conversational Media

Sunday, March 9th, 2008

My daily contact with AOL is the start page that launches when I open the AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) program. I scan that page as well as Yahoo! Instant Messenger's start page to see what headlines teens and young adults are seeing.

Last week, an intriguing headline on the AIM start page  caught my interest enough to click: Mom Finds Osama Video Before Release. It was not, however, the fascinating story of a mom outwitting terrorists online that intrigued me after I'd clicked; it was what AOL was doing with their beta AOL News site.

The AOL News beta combines a news aggregator function with blogging, tagging, and embedding features to enable conversational media. The news, photos, and video are served up by content partners, primarily the Associated Press.

The left-hand sidebar features a "blog chatter" tag cloud with links to related content within blog posts powered by the blog search engine Sphere:

Also on the left-hand sidebar, the "blog chatter" tag cloud, are links to the most popular stories, most commented on stories, and the most recent comments:

This is where AOL begins to really enable conversational media as an integrated extension of modern journalism. One aspect of this is providing embeddable content that users can share at their own online homes such as their blogs or MySpace pages. AOL News is giving users embeddable video from the AP and other sources:

Here's the actual video:

In addition to sharing video, the AOL News beta site features links to top user-submitted news from Propeller, Netscape's digg-like social editing clone, tools for sharing stories on social bookmarking, a link to AOL forums to discuss stories, and, finally and most importantly, the blog commenting function for each story.

I think this must be the type of model traditional media must take if they are to survive in this environment. In order to maintain an audience large enough to sustain an advertising supported model, traditional media will need to use their content to enable conversations around that content and build themselves into the central gathering point for people to discuss learn about and discuss the events of the day.

From a PR and Internet marketing perspective, this conversational media is another opportunity for earned media and the a chance to engage targeted audiences with your client's story.

Aaron Russo Calls for a Revolution if Ron Paul is Removed From Debates

Friday, March 7th, 2008

On The Alex Jones show yesterday, Aaron Russo put a call out for a revolution if Ron Paul gets removed from the Republican Party and is not able to participate in the debates. All I have to say about that is that I agree with him 100%! Do you love liberty? Do you love freedom? Well if so you better give this some serious thought, times are changing very rapidly, films like Russo’s film AFTF have changed the world. The walls are closing in all around us very fast, we will not go down without a fight!

Descent into Darkness

Thursday, March 6th, 2008

I saw two impressive stories today about different aspects of mental illness. “On Dec. 5, 2004, I Killed my Daughter” is a first-person account by Valeria Godines of The Orange County Register describing her descent into the torment of a bipolar disorder. Her story is chilling and brave and beautifully written. Here is how Godines describes what her mental illness felt like:
“What happened to me was like turbulent weather inside my head. Black became three shades darker; red became blood. I could smell flowers in the next room. I felt primal fear, cornered, as if something ominous were after me.”
The package with Godines’ story includes a sidebar with important facts about mental illness and advice on how to get help.

In “Uncovered,” Encarnacion Pyle of The Columbus Dispatch dissects how health insurance in Ohio and some other states usually pays less for severe mental illness than it does for other diseases. Pyle uses powerful anecdotes mixed with strong analysis to show how families struggle as a result of this disparity.

A lament for the loss of Firefly

Wednesday, March 5th, 2008

I recently went to see the documentary Done The Impossible at the London Sci-Fi Festival, which again reminded me how gutted I am that Firefly was taken off air. To anyone who doesn’t know, Firefly was a US TV show written by Joss Whedon of ‘Buffy’ fame that ran for but a few episodes before being canned due to poor viewing figures.

It was about a troupe of thieves trying to get by in space, and had a western vibe, so linking two of my favourite things - cowboys and SF.

As ever in any show penned by Joss Whedon the characters were extremely well drawn. But alas before it really had a chance to bed in and take flight, the show disappeared. It did result in a movie follow-up called Serenity, which was made on the strength of Firefly DVD sales and fan love (which is what Done The Impossible is all about). But although Serenity was a great film, to me a lot of the character interplay and the original atmosphere of Firefly was lost in the in the need to quickly sum everything up in 2 hours.

Most gutting of all for me however was the loss of the show’s mercenary Jayne Cobb from our screens. A character’s whose personality is summed up by the actor that plays him - Adam Baldwin - as “Sex. Muscles. Humor. Thuggery.”

Hugely entertaining, Jayne was marvellously mean-spirited and gloriously un-PC, although Baldwin managed to keep him from being utterly hateful by making him at the same time bizarrely innocent and vulnerable. Most importantly however he also got all of the best lines.

Baldwin obviously also loved the character to death, as was apparent in his interview in Done The Impossible where he is practically crying when talking about the series cancellation.

In the end I was moved to tragically start writing fanfic just to progress a few storylines I wanted to see happen. Which is always a bad sign. Sigh. Well at least I now hear there are a few more comics coming out later this year so, athough not the TV show, I will have crumbs.http://cassandrasworldofsci-fi.blogspot.com/atom.xml
